A Discovery of Witches
Summary:
Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell. (Summary and cover courtesy of goodreads.com)
Review:
This book had some highs and lows for me. I really enjoyed the concept of the library book appearing and the way Diana’s powers manifested. The thing that was extremely frustrating was the insta-love and development of the relationship. To be honest I was having some major “Twilight” flashbacks and that wasn’t what I had expected as the book had come highly reviewed. After that the book was drawn out and had a rushed information dump at the end.
I think there was potential, I liked that Diana was strong and independent, but as soon as Matthew was in the picture, she became super dependent on him. The imagery of environments and wine will definitely stick with me, but I won’t be continuing with the series.
Rating: 2 stars!
