Even When You Lie to Me

Even When You Lie to Me

Charlie, a senior, isn't looking forward to her last year of high school. Another year of living in the shadow of her best friend, Lila. Another year of hiding behind the covers of her favorite novels. Another year of navigating her tense relationship with her perfectionist mom.

But everything changes when she meets her new English teacher. Mr. Drummond is smart. Irreverent. Funny. Hot. Everyone loves him. And Charlie thinks he's the only one who gets her.

She also thinks she might not be the only one with a crush. (Summary and cover courtesy of goodreads.com)

This book provoked some very mixed feelings and I’m not exactly sure what the author was going for.  Charlie is not likable for most of the book, yet she is in that awkward stage in high school full of insecurity and comparisons.  The personality struck me more as someone as a freshman or sophomore rather than someone on the verge of college.

I would have thought that Charlie would have become more comfortable with her relationship with her best friend Lila at least, but then again high school is an awkward age.  Somehow I still mostly enjoyed the book, but was a little weirded out by the relationship with Mr. Drummond.  He’s an appealing teacher yet I have never been a big fan of the teacher /student trobe.  If that’s something you find interesting I’d say go for it, but otherwise give it a skip.

Who should read it? Fans of young adult and somewhat taboo romances.
